Cyber Tip Tuesday 3.21.23

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

Welcome to #cybertiptuesday!

Spear Phishing is a form of cyberattack that utilizes email and social engineering tactics to pinpoint the individual within an organization that is responsible for providing sensitive information or money. It typically takes minimal effort for a hacker to confirm the person who can give them what they want and who may be requesting it.

Once the hacker has determined the personnel they need to contact, they will spoof an email, make it appear as if it is coming from a known person to the person being targeted. In the email, they will provide a link, a phone number or malicious software hoping the recipient will be fooled and erroneously give them the information or money they have requested.

Hackers become more sophisticated with their tactics daily. Organizations must have a filtering solution in place to minimize the threats from making it to the end-users. End-users need to be diligent in confirming the email request is legit and getting their IT provider involved if they are unsure.
