TUSD, southern Arizona’s largest school district, was hit by a ransomware attack earlier this week which led to the shutdown of the district’s internet and network services. Though officials released a statement Tuesday, no info was provided on what the attack entailed or how the systems were believed to be infiltrated. However, TUSD students have been sharing a photo that schools allegedly received through in-house printers. The photo says the systems were hit by Royal ransomware. Royal is a typical ransomware that encrypts the victim’s data. The attackers tell the victim they can pay a “modest royalty” fee to have the files decrypted and restored to a usable format.
